' TIDES OF TIME '
|
This acrylic painting captures a lovely scene of a tree sparrow sat on a moss-covered stone wall, with mainland Britain behind him. Holy Island, also known as Lindisfarne, is a small island situated off the Northumberland coast. It’s linked to the mainland by a causeway which is covered by the tide twice a day. The tree sparrow, red-listed by the British Trust for Ornithology, saw a 93% decline in its UK population from 1970 to 2008, but recent data shows signs of a slow recovery.
A little history of Holy Island:
Holy Island's history goes all the way back to the 6th century AD. It was a hub of Celtic Christianity, with Irish monks making it their home in 635 AD. The Lindisfarne Gospels, crafted in the early 8th century, are just one example of the island's rich cultural heritage. Despite facing challenges like Viking invasions and the Norman Conquest, Holy Island has remained a spiritual haven. Today, it's a wonderful spot for history buffs and nature lovers alike, with its designation as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
