The Farne Islands, a windswept archipelago off the rugged coast of Northumberland, UK, present a seasonal migration that
unfolds with precision and purpose. As winter’s grip loosens, the cliffs awaken, heralding the return of the Puffins.
Their journey is one of instinct, resilience, and an unwavering connection to their ancestral nesting grounds.

This painting portrays a unique scene of a Puffin awkwardly crash-landing into the sea near the Farne Islands in Northumberland, a renowned breeding haven. The dynamic water movement and the Puffin's clumsy descent inspired this choice of composition. Annually, Puffins return to the Farne Islands, a sanctuary free from land predators, to nest alongside thousands of other seabirds such as Guillemots, Kittiwakes, Razorbills, and Shags.
The reference image was captured during a day trip to the Farne Islands on a Catamaran with Serenity Tours in late April 2015. These islands are known for their abundant seabird population, and witnessing the cliffs teeming with nesting birds is truly a remarkable sight to experience.
This painting was meticulously created using GOLDEN Open acrylics, which are highly regarded for their extended working capabilities. They allow me to develop a soft, luxurious finish that emulates the timeless charm of an oil painting. The painting substrate is a high-quality Gessobord by Ampersand. A premium wood panel that is warp-resistant, acid-free, and archival ensures the artwork's longevity.
