Ollie's owner contacted me regarding a portrait of their beloved Labradoodle Ollie for his wifes birthday. He sent me two photos of Oscar and asked if I could use one for the main body and the second for the background. A 22mm deep gessobord was used for this painting as it does not require any framing, minimising costs. As this was a gift, he requested a completion date and I was able to work within this timeframe.
Capturing clear photos of black dogs can be a daunting task due to the dark hues that can hide important details. The photograph I used as a reference had shadows that obscured much of the picture. When I zoomed in, the image became pixelated. I had to rely on other photos to create this portrait of Oscar. During the painting process, I discovered that a blue sky background brought out the best in the portrait, unlike a dark background.
Once the painting is complete, it is coated with varnish. Additionally, felt protectors are attached to prevent the edges of the artwork from coming into contact with the wall.
Below is a short video that provides a closer view of the painting. The artwork has been completed with two layers of high-quality glossy varnish to enhance its appearance and protect it from external factors. I apologise for the unsteady video recording.
