I collaborated a third time with Michael for this commission of Dougal. The reference photo needed more detail and colour to achieve a detailed drawing, but Michael provided additional images. Michael previously commissioned coloured pencil portraits of his father's Labradors, Rua and Seamus. It was a delight to create this beautiful composition, which Michael gifted to his cousin.
The 10" x 12" portrait is popular for head and shoulders portraits. I include a great deal of detail using multiple layers in my coloured pencil drawings. This results in a realistic 3-dimensional portrait that looks great up close and from a distance. I used various colours in this drawing, from deep browns to pinks, reds and yellows. By mixing different colours, I can expand my range of colours and accurately recreate the natural colouring of a Red Fox Labrador's coat.

All my coloured pencil artworks are sold without frames to ensure they arrive undamaged during shipping. In the photo attached, Mike kindly shared the framed portrait of Dougal. The same frame was selected that was used for previous pencil portraits that I created for him.
