Trio of Frolicking Dolphins
Commissioned Acrylic Painting
How the portrait came together
I began the painting by roughly blocking in tonal layers to cover the Canvas fully, placing pointers where necessary to ensure I did not lose the basic outline as I went along although for Wildlife portraits, precision is not as important as it is for human or Pet portraits. The next stage is where I began to build up the details starting with the water and followed by the creation of the sky background. The Dolphins were covered over for a period of time whilst I completed the background and were reintroduced into the painting near the end, once I finalised the Dolphins, I begun to apply the water splashes and then finished up with the tweaking to completion.
Although this was commissioned as unframed, the Commissionee kindly sent photos of the painting once the framing had been completed. He chose one with colours that complimented the main subjects and offered a natural, washed wood finish. A great choice!
