Red Fox Labrador Retriever Drawing | Coloured Pencils
DOUGAL
Portrait size: 10" x 12"
Completed: March 2022

Hi Karen,
I hope this finds you well and a Happy New Year!
You may remember around this time last year, that you completed two pieces of work for me of Rua and Seamus that were for my Dad's 60th birthday. I wanted to see if it was possible to commission for a new drawing, this would be of Dougal who is Rua's brother and would be a gift for my cousins 21st birthday. The family loved your drawings of Rua and Seamus and thought it would be a great gift idea to get one of Dougal. We'd be looking to replicate the same size and style of Rua if possible? Looking back on our email chains, it would be a 10” x 12” in coloured pencils - no background. Let me know if this would be possible? We are quite relaxed on dates, his birthday was last week and we have shared the idea with him.
Best wishes, Mike

I collaborated a third time with Michael for this commission of Dougal. The reference photo needed more detail and colour to achieve a detailed drawing, but Michael provided additional images. Michael previously commissioned coloured pencil portraits of his father's Labradors, Rua and Seamus. It was a delight to create this beautiful composition, which Michael gifted to his cousin.
The 10" x 12" portrait is popular for head and shoulders portraits. I include a great deal of detail using multiple layers in my coloured pencil drawings. This results in a realistic 3-dimensional portrait that looks great up close and from a distance. I used various colours in this drawing, from deep browns to pinks, reds and yellows. By mixing different colours, I can expand my range of colours and accurately recreate the natural colouring of a Red Fox Labrador's coat.
The layering technique consists of multiple applications, initially applied as a base layer, followed by the sequential addition of individual strands of hair. This process continues until a realistic appearance, as depicted in the two images seen here, is achieved. My portraits are intended to exhibit lifelike qualities when viewed both up close and from a distance.
All my coloured pencil artworks are sold without frames to ensure they arrive undamaged during shipping. In the photo attached, Mike kindly shared the framed portrait of Dougal. The same frame was selected that was used for previous pencil portraits that I created for him. A superior photograph of the framed portrait is available for viewing on this blog.
" A BIG THANK YOU to Karen for her fantastic piece of work to complete the portrait of Dougal. This was a gift for my cousin and he loved it! Karen has managed to capture Dougal exactly with the exquisite colouring and detail and professional finish. I couldn't recommend Karen's service enough, she has been proactive in communication and I felt part of the commission throughout the process. Thank you again " Mike

Here are three blog posts I authored detailing the stages of creating Rua's coloured pencil drawing. For those interested in a deeper understanding of each phase, the blogs offer extensive insights. The initial post explores the portrait's preliminary stages, the subsequent one covers its completion, and the final post shares the feedback received after the portrait's return from the framers. These resources could be particularly beneficial if you're considering booking a coloured pencil portrait, offering a detailed explanation of the process. Additionally, the news blog archives contain a wealth of informative articles that further elaborate on my services.
Below are the portraits of two other coloured pencil drawings I have created for Mike. To discover more about each one, click on the images to access their dedicated web pages.
