This acrylic painting exquisitely depicts a male Shelduck perched on a rocky outcrop, nestled among sea pinks. Set against the scenic Newbiggin-by-the-Sea and the far-off Blyth, the artwork embodies the tranquil essence of the coast. The male Shelduck is distinguished by its vivid scarlet bill, which features a prominent knob at the base of the forehead. Sea pinks, commonly referred to as thrift, naturally flourish on coastal cliffs and in salt marshes.
This composition may appear straightforward, yet the vibrant colours of the Shelduck harmonise beautifully with the sea pinks, requiring minimal additional elements. You may also note that the sky features only subtle hints of cloud cover, purposefully subdued to ensure the focus remains on the colours in the bird and the flowers. A touch of iridescent sheen was applied to the duck’s head to create the exquisite glossy green effect that shimmers in the light.
