I recently completed an oil pastel portrait of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, a breed known for its gentle nature, expressive eyes, and silky, feathered coat. This piece was a chance to showcase the versatility of oil pastels, capturing everything from smooth tonal blends to the softness of fur and the fine details that bring a subject to life. Portraits like this highlight just how beautifully oil pastels can convey texture, warmth, and character, making them an ideal medium for pet portrait commissions.
Oil pastels are a really versatile medium, with an ability to capture both fine detail and expressive textures. For this painting, I used Sennelier and Caran d’Ache pastels, as their strong pigmentation and creamy consistency make it easier to build layers, blend smoothly, and create depth of colour. The surface was Clairfontaine Pastelmat, which has a fine tooth that grips the pastel firmly. This allows for a mix of precise lines and softer, blended areas, giving control over both detail and atmosphere in the final piece.
The portrait is built up in stages, starting with base tones to create depth and structure. I then add layers of detail using blending tools and techniques that enhance texture without oversaturating the surface. Silicone blenders are especially useful for soft transitions and precise marks. By working with Sennelier and Caran d’Ache Neopastels on Clairfontaine Pastelmat, the artwork not only achieves vibrancy and fine detail but also benefits from archival-quality materials. Highly lightfast pigments and the durability of Pastelmat, combined with professional framing, ensure the portrait will remain stable and vivid for generations.
Each portrait is created from your own reference photos and tailored to capture your pet’s individual character. I study the photos closely to pick up on those unique qualities that make them recognisable, ensuring the final piece feels true to life. My aim is always to balance accuracy with personality, so the portrait becomes more than just a likeness, it’s a meaningful keepsake.
