Fawn Boxer Dog Drawing | Coloured Pencils
' FUNGUS '
Portrait size: 10" x 12"
Completed: December 2023
In October 2023, my dear friend Jet asked me to create four coloured pencil portraits for her. One of the portraits was a gift for Jet's friend, while another was for her mother. The other two portraits were of her cherished Boxer dogs. I have known Jet for over thirty years, and throughout our friendship, I have had the privilege of creating pencil portraits of her beloved dogs on multiple occasions. In this specific portrait, I captured Jet's adorable Boxer dog named Fungus.
Whilst I can work with most photos, a high-resolution photo enables me to capture even the minutest details, and the quality of the photograph greatly influences the realism in my coloured pencil portraits. The reference image of Fungus offered exceptional quality, featuring a substantial file size that allowed for detailed examination of even the smallest nuances. In order to emphasize the facial features, certain sections of the drawing were intentionally rendered with a reduced level of detail.
Jet made a specific request that I should eliminate the collars from the drawings. The collar in Fungus's photograph was obscuring important details and shading, which required Jet to provide several alternative photos for me to obtain the missing information. In my professional experience, I have created a significant number of portraits featuring Boxer dogs, now a breed with which I am very familiar. This familiarity has enabled me to accurately capture their physical characteristics with ease. It was essential to meticulously showcase their unique colouration and any special markings in a precise manner.

Above are three time-lapse videos that demonstrate the process behind my coloured pencil drawings. Each video is designed to provide a condensed view of over an hour's worth of meticulous work, allowing you to see the process of the drawing coming together in just a few seconds. The fourth video offers a complete view of Fungus's finished portrait, which includes all three Boxer dog portraits.
Below are the final versions of the three coloured pencil drawings. To discover more about each one, click on the images to access their dedicated web pages.
