Dachshund-Terrier Cross Coloured Pencil Drawing
OSCAR
Portrait size: 8" x 10"
Completed: June 2025
This commission was arranged by a client as a birthday gift for a close friend, whose birthday was on June 10th. The query for the portrait was received on May 16th, which only provided a limited timeframe to complete the portrait. I was able to finalise the piece within 11 days, ensuring that it was ready in time for the recipient's birthday, and the client was able to have it professionally framed prior to the celebration.
The customer requested the exclusion of the collar from the portrait, a decision I concurred with and was able to successfully implement the modification. To ensure an accurate depiction of the fur details beneath the collar, I requested additional reference photographs. The customer provided the necessary images, allowing me to complete the piece with the markings rendered as accurately as possible.
Due to the dimensions of this portrait being relatively small, capturing full-body details presents additional challenges, as finer details must be rendered at a reduced scale. Surprisingly, this results in a longer development process compared to larger portraits. My approach involves applying multiple layers, with the final layer designed to be more defined and darker than the preceding ones. I also conclude by delicately softening the mottled colouration on Oscar's body and face to eliminate harsh edges and to impart a polished, glossy appearance to the fur.
Time-lapse videos
To document the progress of each portrait, selected stages are recorded in time-lapse format. Each clip captures approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours of work, condensed into a few seconds. These videos demonstrate the layered, time-intensive nature of the portrait creation process, showing how the artwork develops step by step.
