BuBu - Boxer dog
BuBu has sadly passed away and the Commissionee decided to book this pencil portrait for her husband for Christmas. Joanne sent me some photos of a favourite park they used to walk BuBu and this composition was created to use as the reference photo. The reference photo of BuBu was taken indoors and his ears were back so I used other photos of him that had been sent to me to create the Boxer ears seen in this photo and ensure the tones in his face were balanced out.

THE CREATION PROCESS
I have a real love for creating Boxer dog portraits, they have so much character in their faces and the detail around their mouths I find an exciting challenge in Art and this portrait really allowed me to build extreme detail around the mouth because the photo was detailed and the portrait size was large. I always begin with the eyes as for me this creates character straight away which also aids perspectives too.
I concentrated on BuBu initially and then began working on the loose details of the background, building up layers of finer detail to create the leaves of the trees and the shadows and highlights for shape and definition. The white fur of BuBu was finished with white Acrylic paint to sharpen the tones and create high detail where placed. The portrait was then sprayed with a UV fixative for added protection before BuBu was shipped off to his Mum who was able to get him framed before Christmas day.
