Boxer Dog Drawing | Coloured Pencils
' WATSON '
Portrait size: 10" x 12"
Completed: December 2023
In October 2023, my dear friend Jet reached out to me with a special request. She asked me to create four coloured pencil portraits for her. Jet wanted to give one as a heartfelt gift to her friend, another to her mother, and the remaining two were of her own beloved Boxer dogs. I have known Jet for over thirty years, and throughout our friendship, I've had the joy of creating pencil portraits of her dogs on multiple occasions. This portrait captures the adorable Boxer named Watson, who belongs to Jet's friend Mark.
Jet specifically requested that the collar be removed from the drawing. This can create difficulties since it can hide important details. Only if additional photos show the details obscured by the collar can the option of removing it be considered. To improve the accuracy and detail of the subject's physique, I utilised an alternative body from a second photograph of Watson. This allowed me to overcome the limitations of the reference photo and create a final product that was more precise and detailed.
Below are four time-lapse videos that demonstrate the step-by-step process of creating Watson's pencil drawing. These videos display the gradual development of the drawing, starting from its early stages and progressing towards its final form. Each video is designed to provide a condensed view of over an hour's worth of meticulous work, allowing you to see the process of the drawing coming together in just a few seconds.

I take pleasure in creating my coloured pencil drawings. With over 40 years of experience in this medium, I craft my portraits through the application of multiple layers. Each strand of hair is individually applied, and this layering technique is employed repeatedly to achieve the desired level of detail. This method invariably produces a textured appearance when the drawing is observed closely, contributing to the realistic finish of my portraits. Moreover, I exclusively utilise professional-grade products to guarantee the longevity of my work.
Here are the final versions of all three coloured pencil drawings. Click on the images for more information and to visit their dedicated web pages.
