I was commissioned to create a coloured pencil drawing of a beautiful Boxer dog named Poppy, owned by a lady named Sam. She has an excellent eye for composition and supplied a stunning, high-resolution digital photo of Poppy, a fawn Boxer dog, which enabled me to zoom in on the intricate details and craft a highly detailed portrait for her.
In this article, I provide a thorough account along with photos, explaining the developmental stages of this Boxer dog portrait.

The realism in my coloured pencil portraits is contingent on the photograph quality. Whilst I can work with most photos, a high-resolution photo enables me to capture even the minutest details. This painstaking process explains why coloured pencil portraits require more time to complete compared to acrylics and oil pastels, and typically cost more. I exclusively use professional-grade materials to guarantee the quality of my art.
The reference image was a unique photograph that required only one source image due to its exceptional composition. I brightened the face, enriched the tones slightly, and eliminated the chain to prevent any distractions. I consistently shared updates with images of the progress so that Sam could suggest any adjustments if needed, since it's simpler to make changes while the work is ongoing.
After finishing Poppy's portrait, Sam requested a portrait of her other Boxer dog, Grace. The chosen photo of Grace highlighted her distinct pose, designed to complement Poppy's portrait so that, when displayed together, they would appear facing one another. Here are the completed pencil portraits of the two dogs, presented side by side.
