I recently created this oil pastel painting of our beloved black Labrador Haze. What initially drew me to this particular composition was how it depicted our black Labrador perfectly. He was a loving but rather mischievous dog. I used a hard surface known as Pastelbord to capture the most intricate details. The final product measures 8" x 10" and is a timeless tribute to our 'Crazy Hazey'.
For my oil pastel paintings, I use two premium pastel brands - Sennelier and Caran d'Ache. These brands offer superior coverage and pigmentation, allowing me to create artwork of the highest quality that stands out in terms of performance and overall excellence. I rely on the Ampersand Pastelbord for my oil pastels artwork. Its unique texture, created with marble dust, allows for a level of precision and adaptability that paper can't provide.
During the painting process, Haze was diagnosed with Cancer, adding even more significance to the piece. Throughout the process, he often rested beneath my chair, with his head beside my feet. Occasionally, he would place his front paws on my lap to investigate the oil pastels and see if they were edible.
The finished painting perfectly captures his playful and puppy-like personality, including the memory of the squeaky raspberry toy, which succumbed to a life of silence once he had removed the squeaker. We may only have our dogs briefly, but I will cherish his portrait as a tribute to him.
In loving memory
