Ben the Cocker Spaniel Acrylic Painting
Ben had sadly passed in January 2017 and this portrait was booked as a gift for the Commissionee's neice for Christmas. The lady only had actual photographs and so she posted them out to me, which I then scanned on to my computer and created a bespoke composition within a detailed background for the reference photo.
MEDIUM: Acrylics on board
Portrait arrived safely and I am delighted with it . The likeness is amazing and I know my Niece is going to love it . I also lost my little dog this summer , a little westie and I think in the New Year I will arrange to see you and have hers done also .
Heres wishing you a very happy Christmas and a Peaceful and healthy New Year . Kathleen .
Follow progress of Ben's portrait
The start of the painting starts as loose layers of tones which is used as a placement guide, these areas are then defined with specific tones before the finer detail is added as the last layers. Once the background has been created I concentrate on defining the detail of Ben himself.
Building up the tiny details on a painting this size means I sometimes find myself holding my breath so as not to slip with the fine brush misplacing tones and details - once the portrait has been finished it is then treated with a UV satin varnish for protection, and as the Commissionee had booked framing, the painting is then sealed inside the frame. The 'Grassmoor' frame was selected for this portrait and fits the tones of the Spaniel really well.
