Coloured Pencil
Pets & Portraits Art Gallery
I have been working with coloured pencils for over 35 years, my portraits are created using a layering technique with every single hair, line and tiny detail being applied individually, which can be repeated up to 15 times to achieve the realism in the portraits you see below. A small area can take between 1 to 2 hours to complete and I tend to work between 3 or 4 portraits to keep each piece 'fresh'. I use professional quality products that are lightfast, which ensures your portrait lasts a lifetime.
If you are thinking of commissioning a portrait from me, the images below offer an idea of how your portrait could look, each image has an individual progress page, allowing you to see how the portrait came together and look at the detail up close. The 8 stage order process section below gives you all the information you will need to know before booking your portrait, but do get in touch at any time if you have any questions.
The most recent portraits completed are found at the top of the page.

Coloured pencils are a very popular choice of medium especially for my pet portraits. They are created using an extensive layering process creating realistic fur in animals and skin tones in portraits. Wildlife subjects can also be booked too. Take a look through the slideshow to get an idea of how these portraits are created and if you wish to book your own portrait, all the details can be found at the bottom of this page with an full explanation of how the order process works.

Size sampling
What size portrait would you like? Sizes start from 8" x 10" up to a 16" x 20" and images are provided below to give you a physical idea. Small portraits are only suitable for one subject, so if you require multiple subjects in your painting, it is recommended that you choose a larger size. Let me know if you need any guidance on this.
You can choose a different size than those stated here. Please get in touch to request additional pricing for a size not shown on the price list below.

This portrait was completed in graphite for a couple who were married at Wynyard Hall in September 2013 and was looking for something very special as a keepsake of the day. This large portrait was mounted with an extra wide mount so their guests were able to sign around the portrait during the wedding day and that they had something to cherish of their very special day. Framing - Your pencil portrait needs to be framed under glass and there is always a possibility of damage in transit - as glass is not covered by Insurance under any postal service, I usually recommend you take it to a local framer. If you opt to collect your portrait from me direct and require framing, please get in touch so we can organise something.
CHOOSE YOUR FAVOURITE PHOTOGRAPH(S) OF YOUR SUBJECT
If you are looking to book a portrait with me, a good, clear reference photo is key. The best photos are of the subject in natural lighting so natural colouration shows through, avoid selecting photos taken with flash or taken indoors under artificial lighting as this can change natural colours and may add ugly shadows (may spoil a human portraiture) Selecting your favourite photo is the best option and this can be any type of pose, a head and shoulders or within a background (charged extra) ensure you can see fine detail in your photo when you zoom into it on your computer/tablet/phone as it is this detail that allows me to create the high realism in the final painting. Please ensure harnesses/blankets are removed from Horses when taking your reference photo if you do not want them in the painting, as it will not be possible to remove it during the painting process. If you would like a specific wildlife portrait created, you can either provide me with your own photo or view a few of mine taken from my extensive digital reference library. Here are a few image ideas or if you need help taking a suitable photo, click the green link below these photos to view more help and advice.
IMPORTANT: Image Quality
If you can zoom into the image you have chosen on your computer/ipad/phone and the fine detail can be viewed easily, this makes an ideal portrait. A photo taken on the largest format using an SLR camera (Image 3) is ideal but digital cameras are good too. Camera phones can take great photos (Image 2) but the detail is flat, which can be challenging. When zooming in to your photo, the detail looks blurry (image 1) and pixelates I probably won't be able to use it. Send a photo or photos of your favourite image and I shall see what I can do or recommend.
GET IN TOUCH - ORDER VIA THE BOOKING FORM OR E-MAIL/PHONE/TEXT

SECURE YOUR ORDER WITH A 50% DEPOSIT
A 50% deposit is required before the start of the Artwork which then secures your booking and the final balance is due upon completion and acceptance of the portrait before it is posted out. As I work between portraits, I can begin a commission straight away. Unless a completion date has been prearranged, I will always complete portraits in the order that they were booked. Dependent on workload, I aim for completion within 6 weeks, however, larger and/or more complex portraits are likely to take longer. I will try and accommodate timescales wherever possible. I cannot always guarantee but will let you know if it is possible to complete in time. See my TERMS & CONDITIONS page before you commit, this covers important information including payments, returns and damages.

FOLLOW PROGRESS VIA YOUR PERSONAL PAGE
If your chosen subject is made up of two or more photographs, I will produce a mock up of the artwork so you can clarify before I begin. Progress posts may be added to my ART NEWS page and/or social media accounts unless they are private, but I will upload regular updates onto an individual page where you can watch your portrait come together. Progress pages can be password protected so only those with access to the page link and password may access the page. I encourage any thoughts or feedback during the process in case there are any changes you wish me to make - it is easier to do this during the process rather than at the end.

FINAL PAYMENTS
Upon completion of the artwork, the final portrait will be posted on your individual progress page or if you prefer I can E-mail a proof copy of the final image instead for you to check over. At this stage it is important that any changes you may wish to be made is stated, or if you are happy with the final portrait let me know and I will then varnish the painting before any framing is done (if required). During this time the final balance can be paid once you are happy with the completed portrait which will then be packaged safely & securely ready for postage.
DELIVERY OF YOUR BESPOKE PORTRAIT
Upon clarification and final payment amount, the artwork will be securely packaged (extremely well) and sent out to you using a reputable delivery firm. If you wish to collect from me please get in touch so we can organise something suitable. Upon receipt of your delivered artwork, please make sure there is no damage before signing for it. Let me know your portrait got home safe and sound and if there are any questions, do get in touch.

LET US KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS
It is always wonderful to receive feedback from my customers, especially when I get to see the final framed image in situ too - the fact that these portraits will adorn people's walls for many years to come, offering many memories and bringing comfort to owner's who have lost loved ones, allows me great satisfaction. It would be lovely to hear your feedback on the portrait, a photo of the portrait in situ or alongside the subject if and where possible or you can write a review on my Facebook page at Karen M Berisford's Artworld .
