Trixie was an RSPCA rescue dog. We got her in 2009 just after we had lost CINDY. My Mum chose her but as my Mum was ill at the time, she became a Daddy's girl. When my Mum passed away late 2010, Trixie and my Dad became so close. Even now, she cries when he goes out and she literally follows my Dad everywhere, even sitting on the river bank in all weather with him when he goes fishing. This image is typical, sat on his knee as close as can be! The best of friends!
MEDIUM: Coloured Pencils
I really liked the composition of the photograph whenever I saw it and picked out the strongest tones in the image which were on the cool side so chose a mid grey 300gsm paper to recreate the portrait on. Beginning with the eyes and nose, i then began working in all those short hairs around Trixie's face to build on the definition foundation.
I always tend to start from the eyes and work outwards in a circular direction before ending on the background detail in this case, my dad's trousers and shirt. I changed the colour of his shirt to blue as I thought the wine coloured shirt he wore in the photo was a little dull, however there's a possibility I may change it to wine as I'm not sure about the blue after all, luckily with my Caran Dache Luminance pencils I can do this.
